Interconnection will need orchestration
Opportunities and challenges in a complex, multi-network future
Dean Bubley · WAS #24 · Dublin · · Hosted by Cellusys
Mobile interconnection is becoming more complex along several dimensions at once. Users can hold multiple SIM and eSIM subscriptions, while the networks involved extend beyond national mobile operators to satellite, Wi-Fi and private cellular systems. New services and capabilities bring additional requirements, alongside changing rules on sovereignty, AI and trade.
In this presentation from WAS #24 in Dublin, Dean Bubley examines what those changes mean for roaming, wholesale relationships and service delivery. One example is partial churn: a customer can retain their main mobile subscription while moving some usage and spending to another provider. That can reduce an operator's share of the customer relationship while creating opportunities for secondary eSIM supply, specialist coverage and service assurance.
The wider question is how to coordinate these relationships across networks, services and jurisdictions. The deck explores why interconnection will require more orchestration, and how that relates to existing network, IT, compute and communications systems.
Key themes
- Multiple subscriptions and active SIM/eSIM profiles
- More network types, including satellite, Wi-Fi and private 5G
